The problem with E-mail

Every so often I get reminded why email is an efficient but ineffective way of communicating. Especially you haven’t met the other person.

We loose all the emotional content of the msg. The the expressions, the posture .. all body language in short. Was that last blurb supposed to be funny or serious ? Might not sound like much but often this can contribute to getting off on the wrong foot.

Given the realities of distributed software teams, phone is the next best thing. I am aways surprised by how much info we can pick just from the tone of the person on the other end !

Scott Ambler has a pretty good analysis of the communication models here.
